Studies A-Z > S > STAND
Current lifestyles encourage large amounts of sitting (sedentary behaviour) through increasing car use, computers, and appealing screen-based home entertainment. There is mounting evidence that sedentary behaviour is associated with both diabetes and obesity.
The rising prevalence of obesity and sedentary behaviour has lead to a dramatic increase in the prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM) in younger age groups. As the health and economic costs of T2DM continue to increase, there is an urgent need for effective lifestyle interventions to prevent the development of T2DM in young, at risk, adults.
Our study will assess the effect of theory driven structured education, facilitated using automated technology, on reducing sedentary behaviour and improving health outcomes in a multi-ethnic population of young adults (18-40 years) at risk of T2DM.
This will be the first UK trial to address sedentary behaviour change in a population of young adults at risk of T2DM. It is a proof-of-concept trial and, if successful, will inform and influence current health promotion guidance.
STAND is running throughout Leicestershire, Northampton and Kettering.
