Guideline Adherence to Enhance Care (GUIDANCE UK)

Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases and is predicted to increase substantially in the future. It leads to considerable morbidity and mortality and increased healthcare costs, which can be reduced by effective management and preventive measures.

Recognising the wealth of evidence supporting prevention and management of diabetes, professional and patient organisations and governments have invested heavily in development of guidelines.  Despite there being international consensus on and evidence about management of people with diabetes, there are still large variations in care.

This study aims:

  • To assess quality of care of Type 2 diabetes in clinical practice and compare this to existing guidelines
  • To understand physician and patient barriers to the implementation of guidelines for Type 2 diabetes
Guidance is running in Leicester, Leicestershire, Rutland and Lincolnshire, with the possibility of extending it to Northampton.
