Studies A-Z > E > Expedition

The increasing prevalence of obesity and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) in westernised societies has contributed to increased levels of cardiovascular disease (CVD).
Until recently, T2DM was seen as a disease of older adults. However, the obesity epidemic has led to a dramatic fall in age at diagnosis of T2DM and obese children, adolescents and young adults are increasingly at risk.
The young person with T2DM will frequently be associated with a more extreme phenotype (often obese, leading a sedentary lifestyle and from a minority ethnic background). CVD is a major cause of mortality in T2DM and the affected individual may be asymptomatic for many years.
Expedition is a pilot study that aims to characterise health behaviours and beliefs of young people aged 18 to 30 with T2DM. This study includes the use of state-of-the-art cardiac MRI to document early cardiovascular dysfunction. This data will contribute to the current understanding of the impact of T2DM at an early age and will also inform the development a structured education programme to address the unmet needs of this high risk group.
Expedition is running in both Leicester City and County.
