Studies A-Z > F > Flu Watch

The new strain of H1N1 influenza has spread rapidly around the world, leading the WHO to declare a pandemic. Fortunately, most cases of this new influenza A (H1N1) infection seem to be mild and self-limited and do not require admission to hospital. However, severe illness and death continue to occur.
A major increase in the number of cases is expected over the coming winter period. The UK response has included widespread use of antivirals provided through telephone and internet sites. A major influenza vaccination campaign has recently been announced. Within the coming months there is a pressing need for information on how the new influenza strain is affecting the population – key questions include:
- How many people are really affected?
- What is the range of severity?
- What are the typical symptoms?
- Do antivirals do more harm than good in mild cases?
- How effective and safe is the pandemic vaccine?
- What is the immunological basis of protection from influenza?
- How easily does the new strain of influenza spread?
The Flu Watch study will address all these questions, providing information to inform our response to this pandemic and future pandemics. Flu Watch is now in its fourth year.
