Studies A-Z > M > Million Women
In this new part of the Million Women Study, we are collecting blood samples so that we can include information from genetic and biochemical tests in our analyses. This will help us to learn more about what makes someone susceptible to developing a disease.
The Million Women Study offers a unique opportunity to study the effects of these risk factors in depth because it is so large (nearly 1.4 million women are taking part) and because women have already given us such detailed information on the questionnaires about their use of medication and other lifestyle factors which may also affect disease risk.
Two parts of the study involve general practices:
· ongoing blood sample collection for Disease Susceptibility in Women
· one-off GP note review for Vascular Disease Status Validation
Disease Susceptibility in Women: Update 2006-2010
Over the past four years, we have collected more than 40,000 blood samples, of which 4,789 were taken by PCRN EMSY practice staff. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have contributed to this wonderful achievement! For each patient, your practice would have been offered £10. Please note that from now until the autumn of 2010, fewer women will be asking for such a practice appointment.
Vascular Disease Status Validation: 2010
In early May, letters were sent to GPs requesting clinical confirmation of the vascular disease status in a sub-group of women. Participating practices were contacted about this by your local PCRN team in late April. Thank you to all who have helped us so far. We would be most grateful if you completed any outstanding reply forms in your in-tray, and returned these in the prepaid envelope. You will be reimbursed £25 for each patient, but do not send invoices to the study co-ordinating centre. The PCRN team will be writing to your practice manager about reimbursement arrangements in July.
