Studies A-Z > P > Preparing for the next pandemic
This study looks at H5N1 avian flu and is funded by the Medical Research Council.
Vaccines are considered to be the first line of defence against influenza to prevent infection and to control the spread. The ability to successfully use vaccines during the first wave of a pandemic relies on conditions that have not been met in the past, and may remain unmet in the future. Problems experienced in the past include the inability to produce a sufficient quantity of vaccine before outbreaks occur.
The study aims to:
- Evaluate the antibody responses to one or two priming doses of H5N1 avian flu vaccine
- Examine the kinetics of the antibody responses to one b ooster of H5N1 avian flu vaccine
- Evaluate the magnitude of the antibody responses to the booster
- Evaluate the breadth of antibody responses induced by ‘priming’ and ‘booster’ vaccinations
- Evaluate the persistence of the antibody responses induced by ‘priming’ and ‘booster’ vaccination regimens
This study is running across Leicester City and Leicestershire County and Rutland PCTs.
