Testimonial from Dr Tim Parkin, The Limes Medical Centre
My practice volunteered to be an early guinea pig for the trial in Derbyshire, and was the first practice involved that was using the System One as our main clinical system. This meant that whilst most systems had a ready-made search / audit for the SCOT inclusions and exclusions, we had to write our own. This took around an hour of playing about and was actually quite good fun. The search is now easily exportable to any other practices using System One.
The trial so far has involved running the search and then a couple of hours of my time manually checking the patient's suitability against the criterion. We then mail-merged and sent out the invitation letters, and reply forms, by mail-merging the material you supplied with our patient list, and left you to gather replies. Out of 8,500 patients we identified about 90 patients and had a positive uptake from about 25, which is a fantastic response.
Your - really friendly - Study Nurses have been in the practice for five sessions, causing me about 30 seconds' work for each patient seen by signing prescriptions, but other than that there has been effectively no disruption to the practice at all. I'm now just waiting for feedback and to run the checks of any adverse events.
Overall the study has probably been the easiest I have ever been involved in and actually quite enjoyable to do.
