Studies A-Z > T > Trent Lung Fibrosis Study
Does the presence of thrombophilia increase the risk of developing idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis?
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a chronic, progressive, fibrotic lung disease that affects more than 4,500 people in the UK each year, with a prognosis similar to stage 1 and 2 lung cancer and no known cure.
The overall aim of the Trent Lung Fibrosis study is to develop understanding of the condition and determine whether the presence of thrombophilia is a risk factor for developing idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Using a case-control study design, cases with lung fibrosis will be identified at eight hospital sites, while the required 250 patient controls will by recruited by six to 10 general practices within local PCTs. Recruitment for this interesting and ground-breaking study is due to begin in January.
